Kate won a Yo Dona International Award.

Ten candidates have been part of the YO DONA International Awards 2011. All of them are women with impeccable track record marked by a spirit of struggle, effort and tenacity. Their record at work and the strength of their ideals have led them to champion worthy causes in areas as diverse as politics, culture, science, and music.

Although the road has not been, nor is, easy, they have not ceased their efforts to make the world a better place: Norma Cruz, creator of the foundation 'Survivor' to combat violence against women (Guatemala); Kate Winslet, co-founder of The Golden Hat Foundation to help children with autism (UK) journalist Iryna Khalip, for his bold denunciations of the injustices of the Government of Belarus; Ninna Simmons, for his defense of the environment through the organization Bioneers (USA), Chido Gover, for their commitment and dedication to the orphans of Africa, Maria Blasco for his cancer research, the anthropologist Adriana Kaplan for his fight against female circumcision (Argentina), Montserrat Caballé, across a life devoted to opera, Ana Maria Matute, Miguel de Cervantes Prize 2010, and the octogenarian activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva for its continuing human rights.

The jury for the awards, which also includes great women in the world of communication, has faced a difficult deliberation verdict which has already made public: Kate Winslet has won the award for Best Work Humanitarian and Maria Blasco for Best professional work. The British actress, from the world of glamour that surrounds the stars of the big screen, a woman committed to a noble cause: children with autism. After doubling the documentary Icelandic 'A Mother's Courage: talking back to autism, "Kate was so marked by the problem faced by these children who in 2009 created The Golden Hat Foundation, to remove barriers that isolate them even more in the world living. "The goal of our foundation is to build an assisted living facility, so that autism can live in a safe place as they reach the age to be relatively independent." When the actress knew she had been awarded by DONA she said it was "a surprise and a real honor" because "to be recognized by a large environment is very important to my foundation."
