Kate Winslet passed the hat quite literally after she founded a charity for autistic children.

She dug up a beloved and battered old trilby and sent it around to celebrity friends asking that they either don it or doff it — and take picture of themselves doing so.

Since the Golden Hat Foundation benefits nonverbal, autistic children — children who can’t communicate — she asked each shining star to “express something that’s important to you.”

The celebs’ self-portraits and their pithy words are included in Winslet’s new book, “The Golden Hat: Talking Back to Autism.” In it, the actress tells a story as moving as any she’s acted on screen as to how to she came to be involved in the cause. The book is out Tuesday.

Winslet was asked to narrate a 2009 documentary made by a hard-pressed mother of three whose youngest boy was severely autistic. In the process of researching “A Mother’s Courage,” Margret Ericsdottir discovered that her 10-year-old son, Keli, could pick out sentences from a letter board.

“It was a total breakthrough. He had never communicated before,” says Ericsdottir. “He had been diagnosed as having the mind of a 2-year-old.”

In two years of rapid progress, he was mainstreamed at school and maintains a 3.8 average.

As Winslet, who narrated the documentary for free, learned more about the plight of nonverbal autistic children, she felt the need to do more.

The foundation, which will receive all profits from the book, is geared toward raising awareness that outreach and new technology — computers, tablets, smartphones — can break the silence.

So she passed the hat to Julia Roberts. And Angelina Jolie. And Matt Damon. And Meryl Streep. And Don Cheadle. And Reese Witherspoon. And Johnny Depp. And Leonardo DiCaprio.

All those and many more who claimed fame and fortune by expressing themselves put the hat on and smiled pretty for the camera to help those who can't.

What's she done now? She's gone and found herself a cause.

And that cause is? Autism.

As seen in the film Rain Man? Yes, and also in real life.

Is she for it or against it? Well, it's not really that kind of issue.

What does she want then? She wants to raise public awareness and, ideally, funds for purpose-built specialist education centres to help autistic kids fulfil their potential.

Sounds like a pretty noble cause to me. Oh, it is. She's just gone for quite a strange way of fighting for it.

Which is? She's got all her famous mates to try on one of her hats.

Because it's a magical hat that raises autism awareness? Pretty much, yes. Her famous friends – including Sting, Jude Law, Ben Stiller and Christina Aguilera – have donned the hat, snapped a quick self-portrait and passed it on to their big-name buddies for them to do the same in turn, and now Winslet is releasing a book of their photographs to raise money.

And it's just pictures of celebs posing in Kate's hat? No, it also contains poems and writings by Keli Thorsteinsson, a child with severe non-verbal autism whose moving story inspired Winslet to create the book in the first place. The book's even named after one of Keli's poems: "The Golden Hat."

So it's pictures of celebs in Kate's hat and the occasional poem? Plus a statement from each celeb on what their first words would be if, like Keli, they'd just learned to communicate after years of being locked in silence.

Such as? "Now I can speak again, I'm delighted to be wearing one of Kate Winslet's hats."

Was that Sting? No, I made that one up.

Have any of these stars gone further than just trying on the hat? Further how?

By, say, donating a million quid? I think most felt that giving money wouldn't do as much as passing round headwear.

Do say: "I've learnt a lot about autism …"

Don't say: "… and an awful lot more about this stupid hat."

It's crazy how cruel the British press are to their own kind. They don't celebrate success they mock it. Disgusting article. The hat was a unique way of bringing people together and it's based on one of Keli's poems. The point is not wearing the hat, it's putting together a book to raise money. The Guardian is awful for writing this article.

The men, says Winslet, took much longer deciding on a photo than the women. "Ben Stiller was (with the hat) in the men's room of a cafe downtown, and actually, I'm sure he wouldn't mind me telling this story, but he was in there for like 20 minutes. I was like, 'Dude, what are you doing?' "

Ahhh !!! Je l'adore !!! Alors, qui parmi vous a acheté le livre ? Personnellement, je vais voir si le livre est disponible à la Fnac ou au Furet demain... s'il n'y est pas, je vais tout de suite le commander sur Amazon. C'est pour une excellente cause et il a l'air tellement bien ! Je sens que c'est un livre que je prendrais aux futures avant-premières (si j'ai la chance de croiser certains de ces excellents acteurs !).

J'ai regardé sur le site de la Fnac mais apparement ils ne l'ont pas encore!
