Kate is trending on twitter! So many people are mentioning her because of the TCA press tour for HBO. Today on the panel were the stars of Mildred Pierce, and Kate was there via satellite from Paris. I gathered some of Kate's comments that panel attendees posted on twitter.

About the filming experience:

"It didn't occur to me this was TV from reading script. Only that we had more story with less time. Made us hyperfocused."

"Film, shmilm! I’m telling you, television is so much harder!"

Kate Winslet did not watch the entire film #MildredPierce, just first 5 minutes. Todd Haynes told her it was very different from the book.

About characters:

"Mildred's relationship with her daughter teeters on the brink of obsession. The amount she loves her suffocates her."

"She [Mildred] meant something very different to me in the way that Todd had scripted this."

"Most interesting thing about this story for me is the obsessive relationship she has with her daughter."

Kate Winslet was fascinated by the obsessive love Mildred has for daughter Veda.

During the Mildred Pierce panel, pies were given out to everyone. Also, if you were wondering about Veda's singing in the trailer, Evan Rachel Wood learned how to sing opera in three different languages for the part.

Having seen the original film in his college days, [Todd] Haynes wanted to approach the book from a fresh perspective, without the iconic image of Joan Crawford in his mind.

"For some reason, I pictured Kate Winslet when I first started to read the book," recalls Haynes. "I had never met Kate. I hadn't worked with her before. And I could not get her out of my mind while I was reading. It just felt so innately right and so constitutionally correct that this was the only actress I could see playing this part. Kate became sort of the propelling force while we were writing it and starting to visualize the piece for long-form."

Kate Winslet says that Haynes' reputation as a director and his creative unpredictability drew her to the project. "Todd is something of an enigma. He has the capacity to change it up all the time and do something different and keep surprising audiences and taking risks. I just felt that his work ethic and his choices would go hand-in-hand with my way of thinking and the way that I like to work, which is about taking chances and thinking outside the box."

Given that Winslet appears in virtually every scene in the film, and that of the 280 pages of script, her character is absent from just a half-page of dialogue, she is amused by the term "miniseries."

"There's nothing 'mini' about it," explains the actress. "This was so much harder, I think, than every film project I've done since Titanic.' It was like doing two and a half films in 16 weeks. It was very challenging, but collaborative and rewarding at the same time, thanks to a remarkable cast and a wonderful, highly skilled crew."

"Kate Winslet is an actress who approaches the work, not only from an emotional and psychological perspective, but a physical one as well," says executive producer Pamela Koffler. "On set it was really fascinating to watch her doing the business of becoming her character - chopping the chickens, making the pies. She is just an unbelievable practitioner of acting."

With Winslet in place as Mildred, Haynes and his producers had to find the right actors to play her leading men. Brian F. O'Byrne was cast as Mildred's philandering husband, Bert Pierce, and James LeGros was tapped to play Wally Burgan, Bert's ex-business partner. Says executive producer Vachon, "We were delighted to get these two actors, both at the top of their game, to play these roles.

The challenge of evoking the era, as well as the social and professional evolution of the characters, through the costumes was met by industry icon and award-winning designer Ann Roth, who has previously worked with Winslet on "The Reader."

Says Winslet of Roth's passion for her job, "She's such a brilliant, amazing woman. Her attention to detail is just remarkable and it's such a privilege to be dressed by her and to discover a character with her."

When HBO premieres its miniseries adaptation of "Mildred Pierce" on March 29, fans of the original film -- the 1945 noir that won an Academy Award for Joan Crawford -- should expect a different beast.

Director, writer and executive producer Todd Haynes ("I'm Not There," "Velvet Goldmine") tells press at the Television Critics Association press tour that he was really inspired to do the project by James M. Cain's 1941 novel.

"I had never read the novel until 2008, right as the financial markets were crashing," he says. "I was surprised by how incredibly frank he was... doing a mother/daughter relationship over the 10-year depression period in Los Angeles. This felt modern and contemporary and approachable. It's one of the reasons why I wanted to take it on."

Filling the roles of the titular devoted mother and impossible-to-please daughter are Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood, respectively.

And Winslet, speaking via satellite from Paris, reveals that she never even sat through the original film.

"I didn't know what to do," she says. "When you're playing Mildred Pierce, and you know someone utterly extraordinary played her before, what do you do? I saw the first five minutes, and I thought I actually shouldn't watch it -- I would never be able to unsee it, and I had to honor the book."

That's not to say she wasn't impressed by the few scenes she caught. "I could feel almost immediately, watching Joan Crawford's brilliant performance," says Winslet, "that what I was working toward with Todd was something completely different."

Al she could do was love it, encourage it and support it and want to be a part of it so, so desperately. It’s just crushing. On many levels, they’re extremely normal paternal responses to any child, but they do get very twisted and disturbing as the story goes along. It was utterly compelling to me because I can see how that can happen to any parent.”

Todd Haynes semble avoir vraiment réussi à reconstituer cette ambiance des années 30 ! Et je trouve toujours autant que Kate a ce petit côté qui fait qu'elle s'intègre parfaitement dans les films d'époques. Y a quelque chose qui se dégage des photos, c'est magnifique !
